What is electrical stimulation therapy?
Electrical stimulation therapy, also referred to as “e-stim”, helps strengthen muscles, block pain signals, and improve blood circulation by applying electrodes to areas of concern. It’s meant to replicate the natural contraction and relaxation of muscles. If you experience pain, spasms, inflammation, or muscle weakness, this treatment may be beneficial!
What does it treat?
Electrical stimulation therapy can be used for various reasons. As mentioned above, it can treat inflammation, improve weak muscles, scar tissue build up, and decrease spasms. In addition, lower back pain, tendonitis, bursitis, and post-surgical pain can be treated with electrical stimulation therapy.
What are the benefits?
Electrical stimulation therapy strengthens and heals tissue, improves motor control, increases circulation to the area of concern, slows muscle atrophy, and trains muscle fibers to respond to certain patterns.
What can you expect during treatment?
Electrodes will be applied to the concerned area, connected to an e-stim machine by wire. You will experience a slight tingling sensation, but it should never feel painful. Depending on the circumstances, you may be asked to relax or contract your muscles during treatment.
