Teachers and Chiropractic Care
Here at Simply Southern Chiropractic Center, we are fortunate to work with many of our educators in the Greenville and Spartanburg counties to provide chiropractic care that caters to their specific needs. Teachers are prone to misalignment due to sitting for long hours behind a desk grading and preparing lessons, bending down to attend to small children, and even standing for hours a day at a chalkboard or whiteboard teaching the day’s lessons.
No matter what grade or subject, all teachers can benefit from regular chiropractic care that restores alignment to the body and relieves stress. Let’s dig into some of the specific benefits of chiropractic care for teachers.
Benefit #1: Addressing Injuries, Pain, and Movement Constraints
Most people first begin seeing a chiropractor to treat a specific injury or relieve pain, and teachers are no exception. We often see teachers come in with lower back pain, neck and shoulder pain from leaning over a desk or leaning down to look at a student’s work, wrist pain from writing or typing at a computer, and many other repetitive stress injuries. These issues are the bread and butter of our practice and we can start treatment to get you feeling better as soon as possible. That is our number one goal!
Pain is a warning sign from your body that something is wrong. By the time pain shows up, we’re usually dealing with a deep-seated imbalance in the body that is causing that pain to finally get your attention. As we begin treatment, pain is the first thing to go away. Then, we can address that underlying dysfunction so that the pain doesn’t return, and you stay mobile and injury-free as you go about your life.
Remember, you only get one spine, and while modern medicine can replace teeth and joints, we can’t replace our spine. You gotta take care of the one you got!
Benefit #2: Stress Relief
A lot of people don’t realize how beneficial chiropractic adjustment is for relieving stress and restoring a sense of safety to the body. Putting the body back into alignment and returning the bones to where they should be puts the body at ease and tends to give patients a feeling of calm and clarity after their adjustments. This stress relief also feeds back into physical wellness, since stress can show up as pain and discomfort in the body.
Being a teacher can be one of the most stressful jobs around, and we’ve had many of our teacher patients tell us that chiropractic care is essential for their stress management and self-care. This alone can make a huge difference in your health and your everyday life!
Benefit #3: Exercises You Can Do at Home
Part of our job is to adjust patients at the clinic, and keeping up with regular chiro appointments is essential. But ongoing care is absolutely a two-way street between the doctor and patient. We teach our teachers and all of our patients exercises that they can do at home to correct their posture, strengthen or sometimes relax supporting muscles around their problem areas such as the neck and shoulders or lower back, and relieve any ongoing pain or discomfort.
Over time, these exercises and at-home maintenance can work hand-in-hand with your chiropractic appointments to provide continuous care for a healthy spine, joints, and even your nervous system.
Benefit #4: Long-Term Injury Prevention
At Simply Southern Chiro, our goal with every patient is to use chiropractic care to prevent unnecessary surgeries and unnecessary medication. This goal certainly applies to our teacher population as well! While surgery and medication are necessary at times, we can often prevent someone from ever getting to that point by addressing structural and spinal concerns early on, continuing with maintenance care, and correcting behaviors that contributed to the initial injury or concern.
With ongoing chiropractic care, you can continue to teach for many years in the healthiest way possible. Our mission is to help you continue your mission as a teacher educating young minds and shaping the next generation of our community. There are few greater purposes in this world than that, and we’re happy to support teachers throughout their careers.
Misconceptions of Chiropractic Care for Teachers
Now that you know more about the benefits of chiropractic care for teachers, let’s address some of the misconceptions you might have.
“I don’t have enough time for chiropractic care”
It’s true that you do have to make time for chiropractic appointments in your schedule, and you may need more initial appointments when you first begin getting adjusted. But with time, you will transition to maintenance care where we see you once every two, three, or four weeks. It all depends on your needs and how you keep up with your exercises and self-care at home. Both of our clinics are also open several evenings a week so that you can come see us after work hours without interrupting your day. Think of coming to see us like a reward for teaching all day!
At the end of the day it comes down to this: do you want to make time for your chiro appointments now, or do you want to make time for an orthopedic or pain specialist later when things are more serious? We would much rather get you feeling better now, as soon as possible.
“It doesn’t work”
Sometimes you hear from coworkers or family and friends who have tried chiropractic that it doesn’t work or they didn’t experience benefits. That may be their experience, but saying that chiropractic doesn’t work just isn’t true! Chiropractic care absolutely does work to relieve pain, realign the spine, and relieve stress from the body. The trick is, you have to be consistent and keep up with the treatment. This isn’t a one and done, take a pill and you’ll automatically get better type of situation. Repetitive stress to the body (aka, life) requires repetitive treatment and ongoing care.
We’re here for the long haul, and we promise that if you enter into a partnership with us as your healthcare provider, we’ll keep you healthy and in the classroom for as long as you want to be.
“I’m not sure/I don’t have any experience with chiropractic care”
We understand that it can be intimidating seeing a chiropractor for the first time. Many people are nervous about manual adjustments to the neck, for example. But we never do any adjustment you don’t want us to do. Additionally, there are many tools we can use such as an activator that provide a more gentle and subtle adjustment experience for anyone who is nervous or simply prefers it to a manual adjustment. Simply let us know what your concerns are and we will adjust (pun intended) accordingly.
“Chiropractic care isn’t covered under my health insurance”
Actually, you might be surprised to learn that chiropractic adjustments are covered under your health insurance plan. In particular, teachers often have comprehensive health insurance that includes regular chiropractic visits. We do accept health insurance at both of our Greenville and Greer clinic locations, and many of our current teacher patients take advantage of this benefit.
