Healthy and Gluten-Free Dining Options in Greenville

Key Points

At Simply Southern, we believe that true wellness extends far beyond adjustments and chiropractic treatments. What you eat plays a critical role in healing, recovery, and maintaining your general health. The adage “you are what you eat” continues to be proven over and over again by research exploring and explaining the close connection between diet and the body.1

If you are someone with a gluten or other sensitivity, or who sticks to a strict vegetarian or vegan diet, finding high-quality food that tastes great is even tougher. To support our patients in maintaining their nutritional goals—whatever those may be—we’ve compiled a list of dining establishments near our downtown Greenville office. These recommendations focus on delicious, health-conscious meals that complement your chiropractic treatment and promote optimal wellness.

How Healthy Eating Enhances Chiropractic Care

As mentioned, nutrition is deeply connected to chiropractic health. By nourishing your body with nutrient-rich foods, you supply it with what it needs to achieve optimal health. Below is a deeper dive into the different ways this happens in different systems in the body:

Supports Musculoskeletal Health

  • Bones and joints require nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D to stay strong and functional.2
  • Muscles rely on proper hydration and the amino acids in protein for maintenance, recovery, and growth.

Reduces Inflammation

  • Diets high in sugar and processed foods can exacerbate joint pain and spinal issues.3
  • Anti-inflammatory diets rich in omega-3s, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, can reduce chronic inflammation and associated pain.
  • Spices like turmeric (curcumin) and ginger have natural anti-inflammatory properties.

Aids in Weight Management

  • Carrying extra weight can put stress on the spine and joints, especially the lower back
  • Proper nutrition helps maintain a healthy weight, relieving pressure on the musculoskeletal system.

Speeds Healing and Recovery

  • Nutrients like vitamin C are essential for collagen production, which can strengthen tendons and ligaments.4
  • Zinc supports cell growth and tissue repair.
  • Antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E combat oxidative stress, which can, among other benefits, help strengthen tendons and ligaments.

Improves Nervous System Function

  • The skeletal system—especially the spine—is strongly connected to the nervous system.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids—like eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)—impact the structure and function of nerves.5
  • Many B vitamins—including B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyriodoxine), and B12 (cobalamin)—play a role in nerve signaling and cell metabolism, as well as guarding against nerve degeneration.

Green Fetish

Green Fetish stands out as a leader in health-conscious dining, serving organic ingredients that are good for you and the environment. This establishment perfectly embodies the connection between nutrition and wellness that we advocate for our patients.Green Fetish

All of their ingredients are:

  • Gluten-free
  • GMO-free
  • MSG-free
  • Organic and all-natural
  • Local (when available)
  • Sustainable
  • Compostable

At Green Fetish, every guest can find options to support their healing journey. There are myriad vegetarian and vegan options, including anti-inflammatory ingredients like leafy greens, guacamole, tofu, and turmeric rice. If you are on a keto, carnivore, or similar diet, there are meat options, like organic grilled chicken and sustainably harvested salmon.

Their bowls are particularly beneficial for patients recovering from injuries, as they combine complex carbohydrates for sustained energy with nutrient-dense vegetables that support cellular repair. Green Fetish is open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery

Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery is a Greenville staple. It is located just northeast of downtown, right on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. They have ample car parking, but there are also loads of bike racks for anyone popping in right off the trail. Swamp Rabbit Grocery

Their mission is to “support and strengthen a just and sustainable food system that allows local farmers and food makers to thrive.” Their earnest farm-to-table approach ensures maximum nutrient density in every meal, which directly benefits patients focused on healing and recovery.

Swamp Rabbit Cafe offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches, many of which feature their made-daily stecca bread. We recommend the egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich made with “Just Egg” and Violife cheese, and the banh mi sandwich, with marinated tofu and pickled daikon. Their scones (blueberry, chocolate chip) are also quite tasty.

Kitchen Sync

Kitchen Sync, on Laurens Road, is a unique, soulful neighborhood restaurant dishing up farm-fresh fare with extraordinary hospitality. The furniture and decor made from reclaimed building materials contribute greatly to a warm and inviting ambience, guaranteeing a stress-free dining experience.

While we are fans of almost everything we’ve had from the regularly rotating dinner menu, we have to plug what we think is Greenville’s best gluten-free pizza. Their scratch-made approach ensures they can accommodate gluten-free pizza dough requests while maintaining the nutritional integrity that supports healing.

The restaurant’s commitment to farm-fresh ingredients means their pizzas can be topped with anti-inflammatory vegetables and high-quality proteins that align with recovery-focused nutrition. You can also opt for VioLife vegan cheese. Their pizzas are available at both lunch and dinner.

Sully’s Steamers

Sully’s Steamers, downtown on Washington Street, just off Main, is a regional chain in the Carolinas and Georgia that uses a steamed preparation method for a healthier alternative to fried foods. This lets them create sandwiches that lack inflammatory oils while maintaining satisfying textures and flavors.

The availability of gluten-free bagels and rolls is also a huge plus. Add protein-rich ingredients like eggs, corned beef, turkey, salami, or smoked salmon, for sustained energy that supports healing and maintains stable blood sugar levels. There are also plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, like “The Vulcan,” with hummus, onions, peppers, cucumbers, and sprouts.

Augusta Street Market

Augusta Street Market (straight south of downtown on – you guessed it – Augusta Street!) is a gourmet New York-style, Southern-themed deli, market, and neighborhood cafe, that opened just last year. The market offers fresh produce, house-brined and roasted meats, homemade sauces, and freshly baked bread (including gluten-free options). Augusta St Market bread

The quaint deli features a variety of options, from clubs to Italian sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and more. They also serve Methodical drip coffee and a full espresso bar.

Jasmine Kitchen

Also on Augusta Street, across from Greenville High, is Jasmine Kitchen, a “social enterprise lunch cafe” that provides employment, job training, and career-building opportunities to survivors of human trafficking and addiction. By supporting this restaurant, you can help women in the program learn new skills, build resumes, and even become entrepreneurs.

Their emphasis on healthy food and community wellness creates an environment that supports both physical and emotional healing. Their menu is also chock full of gluten-free options, like grass-fed beef tacos (that are also keto-friendly), fresh corn bisque, and a number of salads. There are also a variety of wraps,  sandwiches, and quiches to choose from.

Unlocked Coffee Roasters

Unlocked Coffee Roasters, in the Village of West Greenville, is a Latin-owned business offering sustainably-sourced coffee from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Ethiopia. Choose pour-over, Aeropress, or espresso offerings. They also have a variety of teas, if you want to skip the caffeine.

Their breakfast menu includes a selection of sandwiches on bagels or their famous Colombian cheese bread (baked fresh daily), made with gluten-free yucca flour.6 They also offer pandebono (the same dough used in the bread) waffles, avocado toast, and specialty dishes like the sweet and savory “Jack Maple”: bacon, pepper jack cheese, egg, and maple syrup sandwiched between pandebono waffles.

Integrating Healthy Dining into Your Wellness Plan

These Greenville restaurants demonstrate that healthy and gluten-free dining does not require compromising on flavor. Remember to always let your server know about specific dietary needs, especially if you are managing celiac disease or severe gluten sensitivity.6 Also, ask about preparation methods, cross-contamination protocols, and ingredient sourcing to ensure your meal supports rather than hinders the healing process.

Supporting establishments that prioritize fresh, whole ingredients and understand dietary restrictions is good for your health and for ensuring that these businesses thrive in your community. We hope you found these recommendations helpful. If so, let us know at your next appointment
